Career Resources - Tips to Help Improve Your Job Success:

Before you start an internship, summer job or regular full-time work assignment, you should…

  • Be aware of your personal strengths, opportunities for growth and be prepared to respond appropriately when
    asked about them.
  • Build a solid resume and avoid costly mistakes (typos, format errors, disclosure of confidential information, etc.)
  • Consider the verbal and non-verbal messages that your resume may send. Ask yourself, “Are my e-mail address,
voicemail greetings and ring tones professional?’ and “Would I be proud of my social websites if a potential employer
    viewed them?”
  • Utilize your resources (career service center representatives, faculty members, formal and informal mentor, etc.) to
provide valuable feedback and constructive criticism.
  • Know your competition, and learn how to stand out from the crowd…in a positive way.
  • Know your employer prospects and do your research.
  • Dress for success. Don’t assume your day-to-day college attire will work in your job assignment.
  • Come prepared with three to five interesting questions to ask during your interview.

Practice introducing yourself, shaking hands, making eye contact and engaging in conversation about your college career, work experiences, and work-related interests. Be open to feedback from career advisors, faculty members, mentors and experienced individuals.

During an internship assignment, demonstrate that you can…

  • Take responsibility for yourself
  • Put customers first
  • Be a team player
  • Show initiative
  • Follow the rules
  • Exceed expectations
  • Keep your commitments
  • Be considerate of others
  • Give and earn respect

Once you have secured regular full-time employment, continue doing the above and…

  • Be positive
  • Understand the element of change
  • Embrace diversity
  • Keep learning
  • Ask for feedback
  • Be patient
  • Be appreciative
  • Think “safety”
  • Think “health”
  • Keep your manager informed
  • Perform with ethics and integrity
