    • The Ramada Plaza Beach Resort in Fort Walton Beach Receives Florida Green Lodging Program Distinction

      The Ramada Plaza Beach Resort in Fort Walton Beach received the Florida Green
      Lodging Program in November 2008 and is the first hotel in Escambia and Santa
      Rosa counties to achieve this designation.

      The Florida Green Lodging Program, established in 2004 by the state Department of Environmental Protection, was created to recognize and reward environmentally conscious lodging facilities. The program measures the property’s water conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction and clean air practices, in addition to assessing how effectively it communicates its green policies to guests and employees.

      Initiatives that helped the Ramada Plaza
      Beach in Fort Walton Beach achieve the
      Florida Green Lodging certification included:

      • - Energy savings from solar panels that are
         used to heat the hotel’s swimming pools
      • - Switching from traditional hot water heaters
         to tank-less water heating systems
      • - Offering guests the option of using linens and
         towels more than once
      • - Purchasing water-efficient washing machines
         and using environmentally-friendly cleaning
         chemicals
      • - Installing low-flow shower heads, faucets and
         toilets to conserve water
      • - Replacing traditional light bulbs with compact
         fluorescent bulbs
      • - Providing recycling baskets on every hotel
         floor
      • - Installing electronic timers on external water
         fountains
      • - Creating an environmentally-conscious
         culture for guests and employees

      Travel Green Wisconsin Super 8 of Monroe Obtains Travel Green Distinction in Wisconsin
      The Super 8 of Monroe recently obtained the Wisconsin Travel Green distinction. Not only did they meet the minimum 30 points to earn this certificate, they scored a total of 92 points to be awarded Travel Green. The owners of the site were also recognized by Wyndham’s Worldwide Green program and Super 8 leadership for their outstanding contributions on February 11, 2009.

      The Wisconsin Department of Tourism together with the Wisconsin Environmental Initiative developed the Travel Green Wisconsin certification program in 2007 based on goals set forth by the Sustainable Tourism Ad Hoc Committee, as well as a review of existing “green” certification programs.

      Initiatives that helped Super 8 of Monroe achieve the Travel Green award included:

      • Installing 600 square feet of solar panels to reduce monthly water heating costs by about 40%
      • Providing overall energy savings from the solar panels to help heat the hotel swimming pool
      • Using recycled content carpeting and installing energy efficient lighting throughout the building
      • Reducing energy bills by about 10% with motion-detection sensors in guest rooms
      • Trimming the energy bill by approximately 20% through the use of heat pumps in Package Terminal Heat Pump (PTHP) units
      • Installing low energy efficient windows and Energy Recovery Ventilators to reduce overall costs
      • Reclaiming heat from the swimming pool to heat the hotel whirlpool
      • Encouraging the linen re-use program for all hotel guests

      Benefits:

      • Despite a tough economy, this property has seen the largest year over year revenue increase since opening
      • Free and increased advertising and public press from being on the Travel Green Wisconsin website and other local press and media
      • New consumers who has visited and stayed at the site because of their Green programs

    • The Days Hotel Grand Rapids, Michigan Receives Green Lodging Michigan Program Distinction

      The Days Hotel Grand Rapids has earned the Green Lodging Michigan Certification. The Green Lodging Program distinguishes lodging properties that are leaders in energy conservation, air quality and reduced water consumption and waste. Green Lodging Michigan is a joint program through Michigan's Energy Office and the Department of Environmental Quality. It is designed to promote Green Lodging throughout the state by encouraging hospitality facilities to adopt cost-saving green practices. It is a voluntary program that establishes environmental guidelines for the hospitality industry to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution.

      Initiatives that helped The Days Hotel Grand Rapids achieve the Green Lodging Michigan Certification included:

      • Converting guest bath lighting to energy efficient bulbs
      • Installing Occupancy Sensor Lighting Controls in public spaces
      • Installing White Roof to reflect summer heat
      • Installing Ozone Laundry system
      • Offering a linen re-use program that allows guests to choose how often their sheets and towels are laundered
      • Resealing the parking lot using eco-friendly products made in Michigan
      • Maintaining hotel pool with Bromine
      • Converting in-room cups from Styrofoam to glass and china
      • Implementing a newspaper and magazine recycling partnership with local Boy Scout Troop
      • Collecting deep fryer oil and use to make bio-diesel
      • Donating opened amenities to local homeless shelter

      The Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour continues to stand out as a leader in sustainable and innovative ideas. The property utilizes green techniques to combine environmental preservation with the highest levels of service.

      Initiatives that the Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour has implemented include:

      • Sorting waste from all guest rooms into recyclable items
      • Producing bottled water on site for guests and team members into reusable glass bottles, saving saving approximately 93,440 plastic bottles per year.
      • Utilizing CHP (combined heat and power system) to create energy, which is circulated for heating the property, hot water, and swimming pool
      • Introducing re-useable newspaper bags
      • Installing low energy lamps on all guest room floors
      • Using re-useable laundry bags for bags
      • Removing plastic stir strips from back of house areas
      • Using environmentally friendly soaps and detergents

      • Purchasing Stern fuel in large tins and decanting to smaller, reducing the amount of tin used
